A BUSHFIRE WATCH AND ACT MESSAGE FOR PELHAM AND SURROUNDING AREAS
Issued At: 31/12/2019 5:22pm

There is a bushfire which started near Pelham which may continue to put Pelham and surrounding areas under threat this afternoon.

Those in the area are asked to remain vigiliant and those who do not live in the area are advised to stay away. Access is open for RESIDENTS ONLY. Some roads are still impeeded by fallen trees, powerlines and other debris so access cannot be guaranteed. Residents who wish to return do so at their own risk, and must make an informed decision in regards to the safety of their property. TFS are currently working hard to clear these roads and make the areas safe.

Tasmania Fire Service firefighters are working to control the fire and construct containment lines. The fire is still very active and remains uncontrolled.

Some rain has fallen on the fireground and weather conditions are currently favourable however fire behaviour is still unpredicatable and fire under these conditions can still be difficult to control.

Pelham and surrounding areas including those on Pelham Road and Clifton Vale Road may still be threatened with ember attack and residents are asked to be mindful of changing wind conditions.

Smoke and ash may make it difficult to see and breathe.

What to do:

If your home is well prepared for high risk fires and you can actively defend it, it should provide shelter.

If you are going to leave, make sure you have a clear path to a safer place.

If your family has made a bushfire survival plan, use it now.

If you don't live near Pelham and surrounding areas, stay away. The roads could become highly dangerous.

Listen to ABC Local Radio or look at www.fire.tas.gov.au for more information.

The fire has crossed Elderslie Road between Pelham and Bluff Roads however that outbreak has been contained.
