Damaging wind gusts about southern and elevated parts
Weather Situation: A cold front has cleared to the east of
Victoria this morning. A second front approaching from the west
will maintain a vigorous northwesterly air stream during Sunday and
Monday.
DAMAGING WINDS, with peak gusts of around 90 km/h, are possible
about elevated areas and the southwest and south Gippsland coastal
fringes from early this afternoon.
Peak gusts may reach around 110 km/h about the Alpine peaks
overnight.
Winds will ease below damaging thresholds from the west during
Monday morning.
Locations which may be affected include the Grampians, the Otways,
Mt Baw Baw, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.
Mount Hotham recorded a wind gust of 115 km/h at 10:45 pm
Saturday.
Falls Creek recorded a wind gust of 100 km/h at 2:07 am
Sunday.
Mount Buller recorded a wind gust of 98 km/h at 10:43 pm
Saturday.
These wind gusts were associated with the passage of the first
cold front.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Be aware that trees that have been damaged by heat or fire may
be unstable and more likely to fall when it is windy or wet.
* Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and
trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or
away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees,
drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from
trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if
possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater,
mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines always assume they are
live.
* Stay informed monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river
levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through
VicEmergency.
