A tropical low moving west southwest across the northwest Kimberley on Thursday may develop into a tropical cyclone off the west Kimberley coast on Friday. A Severe Tropical Cyclone impact possible on Sunday over the east Pilbara coast.

Details of Tropical Low at 8:00 am AWST:
Intensity: Tropical Low, sustained winds near the centre of 45 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 85 kilometres per hour.

Location: within 55 kilometres of 15.2 degrees South 126.1 degrees East, estimated to be 115 kilometres south southwest of Kalumburu and 175 kilometres east of Kuri Bay.

Movement: west southwest at 19 kilometres per hour.

A tropical low over the north Kimberley is expected to move towards the northwest Kimberley coast during Thursday. Late Thursday or during Friday the low is expected to move off the northwest Kimberley coast and may develop into a tropical cyclone during Friday. It is expected to intensify further into a category 2 system before taking a southward track on Saturday towards the east Pilbara coast, making landfall possibly as a severe category 3 tropical cyclone during Sunday.

GALES with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour may develop in coastal parts between Kuri Bay and Bidyadanga, including Broome during Friday afternoon. GALES may extend further southwest to between Wallal Downs and Port Hedland late Friday or early Saturday. If the system tracks further west then GALES may extend to Whim Creek on Saturday.

DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts to 150 kilometres per hour may develop along the coast between Broome and Pardoo Roadhouse during Saturday or early Sunday as the system moves towards the coast. VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts in excess of 165 kilometres per hour may develop from Sunday morning as the system intensifies and approaches the coast.

Heavy rainfall is likely over the northwest Kimberley on Thursday, extending to the west Kimberley on Friday and the east Pilbara on Saturday. A Flood Watch is current for the Kimberley District, please refer to for further details.

DFES advises of the following community alerts:

BLUE ALERT: People between Kuri Bay and Wallal, including Broome and Derby need to prepare for cyclonic weather and organise an emergency kit including first aid kit, torch, portable radio, spare batteries, food and water.

Communities between Wallal and Whim Creek, including Port Hedland should listen for the next advice.
