Headline:
Tropical Cyclone Anika, category 2, is making landfall on the
north Kimberley coast .
Areas Affected:
Warning zone: WA/NT Border to Kuri Bay including Kalumburu and
Wyndham.
Watch zone: Kuri Bay to Beagle Bay, not including Derby.
Cancelled zone: Daly River Mouth to WA/NT Border.
Details of Tropical Cyclone Anika at 9:30 pm ACST [8:00 pm
AWST]:
Intensity: Category 2, sustained winds near the centre of 95
kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 130 kilometres per
hour.
Location: within 20 kilometres of 13.9 degrees South 127.1 degrees
East, estimated to be 65 kilometres northeast of Kalumburu and 265
kilometres west of Wadeye.
Movement: southwest at 18 kilometres per hour.
The Tropical Cyclone Anika is located on the north Kimberley
Coast, east of Kalumburu, and is moving southwest. The system is
expected to maintain category
2 winds tonight, before weakening slowly on Sunday as it tracks
across the Kimberley Sunday into Monday.
In the longer term, Anika is likely to move offshore from the
coast near Kuri Bay on Tuesday and strengthen again off the WA
coast.
Hazards:
DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 130 kilometres per hour are
occurring near the system centre tonight into Sunday morning.
GALES with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour are currently
occurring along the Kimberley coast between Kalumburu and Wyndham
and are expected to extend further south and west across the north
Kimberley overnight tonight and during Sunday.
GALES could extend along the west Kimberley coast to Kuri Bay
tomorrow and to Beagle Bay (not including Derby) by Monday
afternoon.
HEAVY RAINFALL is expected to develop about northern parts of the
Kimberley later today and continue into early next week as the
system tracks along the Kimberley coast.
Tides near where the system crossed the coast are likely to rise
above the normal high tide mark with very rough seas and flooding
of low-lying coastal areas.
Recommended Action:
DFES Advises the following Community Alerts:
RED ALERT for people in or around Kalumburu, you need to go to
shelter immediately.
YELLOW ALERT for people in or around Kalumburu to Mitchell Plateau
not including Kalumburu and not including Wyndham. You need to take
action and get ready to shelter from a cyclone.
BLUE ALERT for people between Wyndham and the NT Border, but not
including Kununurra and Mitchell Plateau to Kuri Bay, not including
Mitchell Plateau. You need to prepare for cyclonic weather and
organise an emergency kit including first aid kit, torch, portable
radio, spare batteries, food and water.
Remaining people in the North Kimberley and the West Kimberley are
advised to stay up to date with weather warnings and
forecasts.
