Issued at 11:31 am EST on Monday 26 August 2024

By the Bureau of Meteorology, Hobart.

Flood Watch Number: 2

MINOR FLOODING IS LIKELY FROM WEDNESDAY, WITH ISOLATED MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE THROUGHOUT THE FLOOD WATCH AREA.

WARNING NUMBER 1 RE-ISSUED WITH CORRECTED NEXT ISSUE TIME.

A west to northwesterly airstream begins to develop today, becoming strong ahead of a cold front which crosses the state later on Tuesday. Another cold front embedded in the strong westerly winds moves over the state during Wednesday, as a trough approaches the west and crosses the state into Thursday. A northwesterly airstream redevelops Thursday ahead of an approaching cold front.

Catchments across Tasmania are relatively wet from rainfall over the last several weeks, and catchments will react quickly to rainfall.

A series of fronts will cross Tasmania during this week, with total accumulated rainfall likely to be greater than 100mm in parts of these catchments.

Widespread minor flooding is likely throughout the flood watch area, with isolated moderate flooding possible. Especially in smaller catchments, several peaks are likely to occur during this week.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

North Esk River
South Esk River
Meander River
Macquarie River
Mersey River
Forth River
Arthur River
Nelson Bay Coastal Rivers
Pieman River
King-Henty Rivers
Huon River
Derwent River
