Severe thunderstorms in the north east of the state this afternoon.

Weather Situation: An unstable environment about areas of surface convergence, aided by a passing upper feature, is initiating severe thunderstorms about the north east of state this afternoon. These storms are moving slowly to the east and expected to weaken come the early evening.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Launceston and Scottsdale.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
